Stormwater Management and Climate Change Adaptation Project - PROGEP II
PROJECT CONTEXT
In September 2020, an extreme climate event confirmed the performance of investments under the Stormwater Management and Climate Change Adaptation Project (PROGEP, August 2012–May 2020) while revealing urgent needs in other urbanised areas. Exceptional rainfall of about 200 mm in 24 hours in peri-urban Dakar left PROGEP drainage areas less affected, while uncovered zones suffered far greater damage. More than 15 million people were affected across several cities, with loss of life and thousands of families losing their homes. Following the 2020 and 2022 floods, the Government of Senegal requested World Bank support to continue and expand drainage investments.
