Saint-Louis Coastal Protection Project (PPCS)

PPCS

A thin strip of sandy land between the Senegal River and the ocean, the Langue de Barbarie (Saint-Louis) has for decades faced serious climate-related hazards, notably sea-level advance.

The Langue de Barbarie is at risk of disappearing, mainly because of coastal erosion that regularly destroys homes and public and private infrastructure, leading to frequent displacement of affected populations.

The Mayor of Saint-Louis raised this coastal erosion issue at the One Planet Summit in Paris on 12 December 2017, especially for neighbourhoods on the Langue de Barbarie.

An announcement was made by the President of the French Republic during his visit to Saint-Louis on 3 February 2018.

The project therefore builds a frontal rock-armour protection structure over a length of 2,150 m. The works cover the entire southern part of the urbanised area of the Langue de Barbarie, from the start of the wall in the north (Ndar Toute) to the south (Ngueth Ndar) at the end of the urban area near the fish market.

It continues the emergency protection built in 2017/2018 by Eiffage to protect the Goxu Mbacc neighbourhood north of the zone.

Objective of the PPCS:

Rapidly protect people and assets in neighbourhoods on the Langue de Barbarie from coastal erosion risk, and help improve scientific knowledge of coastal issues and its dissemination.

Financing:

€16 million (State of Senegal and AFD)
